An increase in areas under Pistachio cultivation in Sweida 

Sweida, SANA- Despite its recent cultivation, Pistachio has an important rank among the fruitful trees in Sweida, which witnessed a gradual increase in areas planted with pistachios and a good production that gets returns for its farmers.

“There has been a gradual increase in areas planted with pistachios in Sweida, exceeding more than a thousand dunums during the past ten years, “according to the Director of the Pistachio office at the Directorate of Agriculture in Sweida, Wissam Khaddaj.

The province’s annual production ranges between 125 and 550 tons, as the province produced 362 tons last season, Khaddaj clarified.

The cultivation of pistachios in Sweida has succeeded due to the availability of environmental and climatic conditions for their cultivation and the care paid by many farmers, he added.

The average production of the peeled Pistachio tree s in Sweida ranges between 2 and 5 kg, he noted.

During the current season, 15,000 plants were sold, including 1,200 grafted plant and the rest with seed, while the next year’s plan is to produce 1,000 grafted plants and 30,000 seed plants.

The pistachio ranks fifth among the Syrian provinces in terms of cultivated areas.
